The Lush™ Effect and Four Reasons to Appreciate Them

Bubble bars, bath bombs or fizzies, bath melts. . . these colorful bath treats have become incredibly popular in recent years, due in no small part to what I call, “The Lush™ Effect.”

For those of you who don’t know what Lush is, it is arguably the biggest trend in bath and body retailing in two decades. Originating in the UK, the company has expanded to the USA, Canada, Australia and other countries, making quite a splash in the market (Yes, the pun was intended).

Many of my fellow handmade bath and body creators have leveled criticism against Lush for various reasons–the synthetics they use, the scents, the packaging or lack thereof and more.  What I would like to point out however, is four reasons you should appreciate Lush.

  • They have popularized bath and body products, which has created a demand in the market for fun and novel products. This trend trickles down to you. Net result: you get more eager customers.
  • They have popularized handcrafted bath and body products. Their claim of handcrafted products makes you look even better.
  • They have given you ideas for products. Admit it. You probably wouldn’t be making and selling everything you are currently selling had they not paved the way. Some of you even carry dupes of their scents.
  • Their price point is advantageous for handcrafters. Unlike bargain stores that the handcrafter cannot begin to compete with, Lush products generally fit quite nicely in that their customers will gladly pay your prices, being used to a higher price point.

The next time you are tempted to treat a famous bath and body company with contempt, just remember how they have helped you instead. Smile when your customers ask for bath fizzies!

Until next time, may your days be filled with bubbles and wax.
